Leonard Mason The Death Angel has been very busy in this place the past week. Seldom has it been the task of any correspondent to chronicle the death of three neighbors in one week. Saturday, Nov. 10 Leonard Mason, our oldest inhabitant, passed away at his home at Moody's Mills, better known now as Libby's Mills. About one year ago he suffered a shock, from which he never recovered, being quite helpless all of the time, but not confined to bed but a few days. Uncle Leonard as he was familiarly called was a man loved by many and respected by all, kind hearted as many a neigh- bor can testify. One little incident stands out in my memory as chacteristic of the man. One very dark evening many years ago, myself with a baby in my arms and my brother and wife with a baby, were coming through the Mason swamp, a narrow and bad piece of road and is today. My brother was driving a young horse and it was so dark we could not see one inch ahead and we heard a double team coming and we said "what shall we do." My brother said "I think it is Leon Mason". If it is we are all right, and he called and found it was and Uncle Leonard said "sit right still and hold tight and he put his team into the ditch. I always wondered how he did and came out whole, but he did and that was Uncle Leonard, that he took risks to save others. We think he has left his children a good heritage. An honest man has gone from us and the sympathy of a large circle of friends goes out to the family. His age was 85 years and 10 months. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, Mrs. Augusta Mason, two children, by a former marriage, Mrs. Rose Mason Tibbetts, and a son, Frank Mason, and by the second wife he had two children, Leon, who accidentally shot himself some years ago, and Miss Annie, who at present is with her mother. Funeral services were conducted by the Masonic Order. Rev. S. G. Spear spoke words of comfort to the friends. The interment was in the Nutter cemetery.
